(Meals not included. Students can expect to pay about $1,300 per term for all their meals.)
The OSAP office will be able to answer questions and help students to integrate more fully with British students. Each college has a British Student Advisor who will help students to integrate quickly into college life. There is a damage/security deposit of $300 a semester. Graduate study is available at the same costs. Summer study is also an option. Students enrolled for the Fall term who wish to study in Oxford in September may enrol in 4-5 tutorials in that month and earn an additional 4-5 credits.
The fees for the September programme (outside of the normal Oxford term) are $2,300. The fees are lower than those for our summer session since the student is enrolling for over a full term and our administration costs are lower.
Because fees for both Visiting Students and Associate Members are set on an "average use" basis, there are no refunds for students who choose to enroll in less tutorials (or who choose not to take a certain tour, not to use a certain library, to leave a week or two early, etc.). Students may (with approval) enroll in a few additional tutorials at no extra cost.
OSAP is one of the few overseas programs which has made arrangements to recommend highly qualified candidates for a few scarce Visiting Student places in several Oxford Colleges which include University privileges.
Registered Visiting Students are full members of their college and have university privileges on the same basis as degree candidates. They have full use of the university library (the Bodleian) and the appropriate faculty (departmental) libraries and may normally use laboratory facilities. The college must have three months advance notice and labs are subject to the approval of the academic department. They have the same rights to attend University Lectures, Seminars and classes as do candidates for Oxford degrees (which they are not). Students in the natural sciences are very welcome. Most Oxford Colleges accept a very limited number of Visiting Students from the US each year. There were about 400 American Visiting Students in the whole University (of 45 colleges) last year.
Such highly qualified students, if recommended by OSAP and accepted by an Oxford college, receive letters from college officers officially admitting them to an Oxford college. They are academically supervised by the college and taught in the same way and to the same standards as degree candidates. At the end of their studies they receive academic records directly from the college (not from a US educational institution) confirming that they were registered by the University as Visiting Students.
We must stress that we can only recommend students; admission is always entirely the responsibility of the Oxford college.
Applicants should have completed two years of university with a minimum GPA of 3.5. Please send us two strong letters of recommendation from professors. A sample of written work is required. Magdalen College requires a minimum GPA of 3.6.
Because OSAP must pay higher college and University fees, the costs for Visiting Student status are much higher than the fees paid by Associate Members. Costs for one term (13 weeks of residence) in 2007-2008 are $21,520. Two term fees are $43,400 and the year fees are $56,000. Most of the US colleges that work with us are very happy with Associate Member status and consider Visiting Student status to be a bonus but not essential. It is however, an option for those highly qualified students who might be interested.
For 2008-09, costs for one term are $22,600, two term fees are $44,100 and the year fees are $58,800.
Because fees for both Visiting Students and Associate Members are set on an "average use" basis, there are no refunds for students who choose to enroll in less tutorials (or who choose not to take a certain tour, not to use a certain library, to leave a week or two early, etc.).
Students, if they wish, may apply for Visiting Student places in Oxford colleges on their own. If they do so and are accepted, their fees will probably be less but they will not have the "safety net" of a U.S. study abroad office in Oxford. Most Oxford colleges will only accept a Visiting Student for an entire academic year and most of these places are "reserved" for students applying through U.S. colleges which have made special arrangements with individual Oxford colleges.
